Evaluation for Artefact Unit

This is the evaluation for my final book cover. I answered these questions honestly and gave my opinions on the successful and less successful parts of my work.

My Book Cover

This is my final book cover for the Artifact unit of the course.  I scanned drawn pictures into the computer and edited and improved them using Photoshop. At first, I didn't intend to use a stroke around the images and writing, it was something that I accidentally fell across and decided to include in my work. However, I'm glad I used it as it adds to the girly, fairy tale look I wanted to create in my work. I think my book cover was successful and I am very happy with the final design.

These are some draft drawings of fairy characters that I was considering using on my book cover. I tried to draw very different characters so I could choose which one I thought matched the role the best and which one I would prefer to use.

These are draft drawings of other components that I am considering including on my final book cover. I chose these items as they all associate with the theme I have chosen of fairytails. I really like the toadstools and am definitely going to use them somewhere in my work.

These are drawings of scenery and other items I could possibly include on my final book cover. I havn't decided what exactly I'm going to use yet but probably won't be using the witches broom, hat or cauldron as these were just items associating with the fairytail theme but are not actually included in the storyline of my book. I do, however, really like the stars and could use these to fill up any background space on my cover.

This is the draft of my final book cover drawn in pencil. I used my Draft Drawings pages to decide what was going to go on my final design and decided to use the stars and the toadstools. I also added extra bits as I went along and will continue to fill it up more when I scan it into the computer and begin to edit and improve it in Photoshop.

Production Plan

This is my Production Plan. It is a plan of what I am going to do in the upcoming weeks to prepare and create a successful children's book cover. I have tried to include all the stages of the process that I can from scanning in my rough drafts to completing an evaluation on my final book cover. I have also included the appropriate dates that I will be completing each planned task and a list of the equipment and materials I will need in order to do that task. This plan will help me to get everything done on time and finished by the correct date. It will also help me to get organised before tasks so I don't waste any time.

Risk Assessment

This a Risk Assessment. This shows what were doing to avoid any injuries or problems that occur in our working area when completing our tasks. I have noted the potential hazards that could occur, displayed the level of risk that i thinkthat potential hazard has and said what control measures we have in place to avoid it. These control measures should help us to not have any injuries or problems in the class room meaning we can work in safe and comfortable surroundings.

Homework- Moodboard

This a moodboard of images, collected off the internet, that associate with my chosen book idea. I have chosen the idea of fairytails and fairies so I included pictures of toadstools, fairy wings and palaces on my moodboard. This piece of secondary research will help me to gain some ideas of what kinds of things I am going to include on my book cover.

Quentin Blake

This is a powerpoint I created about the Illustrator Sir Peter Blake. I chose Peter Blake because I like his how his illustrations are simple but effective.

New York Photo Edit

This was my favourite part of learning to use Photoshop. I saved this black and white photo of New York off a file on the computer and edited and improved it in the programme Adobe Photoshop. Most of the editing on this photo was accidental as I wasn't very familiar with Photoshop so was just really experimenting and getting to know the functions of different tools. Despite this, I think that the outcome was very successful.The writing and streaks of sunshine were originally from a different file that I added onto the photo, however I changed the colour and added certain things like the splodges around the suns rays.  I really like the graffiti writing I added onto the side of one of the buildings and the cartoon- style, yellow steps I added on top of the existing ones on the photo. This exercise really helped me to expand my knowledge of Photoshop and helped my confidence in the process.

Bugs made of Ink

This was a small exercise we did in class, without using the Mac Books. We drew random shapes on the page using multi- coloured paints then drew into them using black ink to turn them into bug- like creatures. To expand on our drawings we were told to add as much detail as we could using the black ink so I added swirly patterns and short, sharp lines onto my spider- like creature. I really enjoyed this task as you didn't have to really try to make it look good because it was totally random and purposely a bit messy.

I created this pirate using Illustrator. The image originally came from a blog but was only consisted on black and white outlines. I saved the photo and edited and improved it using various tools on Illustrator. I added colour to the image and created darker, bolder lines around certain areas to add emphasis. I enjoyed creating the pirate but find it easier to use Photoshop as I know more of the tools and have learnt to understand the functions a lot better.

Batman & Robin

This was a hand drawn document that was scanned into the computer. I then uploaded it into Photoshop and coloured it using the Magic Wand Tool. I expanded the different sections i was colouring in by 2 pixels so there wouldn't be any white gaps in between the black lines and the fill.

I like the style of the illustrations on this book cover. The lines are very harsh and sharp but the actual images are still made to look fun and enthusiastic. Although there isn't much writing on this cover, the conventions are quite clear and the story line is quite simple to understand before you begin to read the book. This will help me to gain a wider knowledge into the conventions of children's book covers and I will now include them onto my own.

Book Analysis- My Grandmother's Clock

I chose to analyze this book cover as it was very different to the other two that I had looked at. This cover was a lot more serious and therefore used effects and techniques in different ways to the others.

I chose to analyze this book cover as I liked the look of the cover. I think it looks fun and enjoyable to look at as well as read. By analyzing book covers I was able to gain a much wider knowledge and understanding of children's book covers and this will help me a lot when I come to making my own. 

Wriggle and Roar by Julia Donaldson, Illustrated by Nick Sharratt

This is a book analysis of the children's book Wriggle and Roar by Julia Donaldson. This analysis will help me to make my own book cover a success as I can use the conventions and some of Nick Sharratts illustrating skills. I really like the cover of this book as it is bright and colourful. Although I hope to use alot of colour on my cover, I will probably use more pastel, toned- down colours to add to the girly, fairytail theme.

Leaves

This image was  originally just one black and white leaf. I saved the image from a blog and edited it using the programme Illustrator. I duplicated the layer of the first leaf over and over and arranged them into an effective layout on the page. I changed the sizes and colours using various tools and drew around the outline in different shades of the colour green.
